A set of six Sanju Saku Japanese silver and enamel tea spoons
For sale is this set of six Japanese Meiji period silver and enamel teaspoons. Each teaspoon with slightly different floral design and enamel to the bowl. Each spoon has an insect to the handle terminal (Three moths/bees, two beetles, one butterfly).
The spoons are unmarked but are essentially identical to a marked set previously in the Collection, stock number A741, that carry the triangular turtle mark of the renowned Japanese maker Sanju Saku, and I am certain this is a true set of six all by that maker. The spoons are in very good original condition with no noticeable enamel losses and no restoration. There is minor enamel loss to one, possibly two spoons, that does not detract from their overall appearance – please see images. The detailing of the flowers is really outstanding.
Sanju Saku was one of Japan’s leading silversmiths, based in Yokahama, making and retailing silver with enamels to this style c 1880-1920.
