A Child and Child necklace reputedly designed by WAS Benson
Price range: £3,750
For sale is this very special necklace reputedly designed by WAS Benson for his sister in law Sylvia Fogg Elliot (1868-1920) nee Hunt. Sylvia was the sister of Benson’s wife, Venetia (1864-1940). The necklace is marked for the artistic jewellers of the period Child and Child, who would have made and retailed this piece.
The provenance of this piece is to Tadema Gallery who acquired the necklace directly from descendants of Sylvia (see images). The “S” in the chain of the necklace reputedly stands for Sylvia. Sylvia married Fogg Elliot in 1889 and Venetia married Benson in 1886. The two sisters were daughters of the painter Alfred Hunt who was close to Burne Jones and the pre-raphaelite circle. This piece dates to c 1900.
The necklace is made of silver with gold clasp. The green stones are jade, the blue stones are aquamarine.
Other images shows a photo Sylvia with her sister Venetia (and husband and sister Alice).
