A Charles Ashbee for the Guild of Handicraft silver enamel pendant/brooch

Price range: Sold

For sale is this stunning Guild of Handicraft silver and blue enamel pendant/brooch, designed by Charles Ashbee as a flower with central stone that I believe is Conemara marble.  I would date this piece to the early years of the Guild of Handicraft in Essex House c 1895-9, and the blue enamel is an early example of the Guild’s work.  The piece is designed as both brooch and pendant in keeping with several other pieces like this by the Guild of Handicraft made at this time.  Very similar designs by Ashbee can be seen in “Jewellery & Metalwork in the Arts and Crafts Tradition”, Elyse Zorn Karlin, 1993, page 119. The design of a similar brooch (with red enamel) dating to 1897 is also shown in Alan Crawford’s book ” C.R. Ashbee” page 355 – see images.

The pendant/brooch is unmarked but is attributed to Ashbee and the Guild with certainty.

Condition is excellent and original.
