A Charles Ashbee for the Guild of Handicraft silver mustard

This mustard was on loan to the “Cockneys in Arcadia; C R Ashbee in Chipping Campden” Exhibition at Court Barn Museum 7th April to 9th July.

This major exhibition celebrating a decade of Court Barn is curated by experts Alan Crawford and Mary Greensted and is the first to showcase C R Ashbee’s Campden period and will include the full range of Ashbee’s work during that time, as a designer of furniture, metalwork, silver, jewellery and printed books.

A Charles Ashbee for the Guild of Handicraft silver mustard set with green chrysoprase.  A really iconic piece, a variant appears in Ashbee’s book Modern English Silver, plate 34 (lower right).  It also appears in the archive of Guild of Handicraft photos held in albums at the National Art Library and reproduced in the journal The Builder 1901.  The mustard is with it’s original Powell liner and a modern Guild of Handicraft spoon.
