A Guild of Handicraft silver box with Fleetwood Varley landscape enamel
For sale is this fabulous Guild of Handicraft silver circular box set with Fleetwood Varley enamel plaque depicting a river landscape in evening light.
The box represents classic Guild of Handicraft silver workmanship with lovely planished finish. The plaque represents very fine work by Varley who was working with the Guild of Handicraft c 1900-1910. Varley achieved his best enamels, like this, through multiple firings of different layers of enamel to create his impressionist landscapes with such depth. In this case he has managed to capture a pinky evening sky, with shadowy trees with a still slightly glinting river in the foreground.
Condition is absolutely excellent, the enamel is original and without damage, the marks crisp.
Both base and lid are fully assayed for London 1902. The plaque is not signed (quite possibly signed on reverse, enclosed by silver). It is unequivocally by Fleetwood Varley.
