A gem set silver early Gothic revival chalice by Reily and Storer
For sale is this rare, beautiful and unusual silver stone set chalice. Whilst it looks like it is in the arts and crafts tradition, it is in fact an early Gothic revival piece by the important late Georgian / early Victorian silversmiths Charles Reily and George Storer, assayed for London 1845. As such, with its overall relatively plain design, it is one of those pieces that illustrates the Gothic revival influence on Arts and Crafts design some decades later. Silver set with stones is very uncommon at this time, typically preserved only for the most splendid and important, often Royal, pieces.
The chalice is in excellent condition and a heavy gauge of silver. I believe the pyramid cut stones to the stem are agates, but they may be glass. The top half of the makers mark is rubbed but still identifiable as Reily and Storer.
The chalice bears strong similarities to an unattributed design held at the Victorian and Albert Museum ref 28397-23, see link. I believe it likely the design of this chalice was by one of the important gothic architects/designers of the period, not simply by Reily and Storer, This chalice is from an important arts and crafts and gothic revival collection and was acquired at Sothebys in 1972.
