A large Edmund Thomas Wyatt Ware figural silver spoon
A rare Edmund Thomas Wyatt Ware silver spoon, signed with his makers mark and assayed for London 1904. The spoon is an exceptional gauge of silver weighing 3.2 oz, and 18.5 cm long. The handle shows classic Central School of Arts motifs, though very early and more normally associated with Henry George Murphy post 1914. The finial is cast, of a bishop or saint.
Ware first registered his mark as an independent silversmith in October 1903 making this spoon one of his earliest works. Condition is excellent, with perhaps some slight rubbing to the detail of the finial.
Thomas Edmund Wyatt Ware was a teacher of jewellery and goldsmithing at the Central School of Art from c. 1910-1940, alongside the likes of H G Murphy. Initially he trained as a sculptor and n his later years he became a highly regarded sculptor. A gold and cabochon sapphire engagement ring he made is on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum, see link for more details.
