A beautiful pair of brass arts and crafts candlesticks
Price: Sold
I am delighted have this large pair of brass candlesticks for sale. They are unsigned but appear in the Art Workers Quarterly Vol 2 (Issue 6, 1903, page 70) as designed and made by William Thomas Pavitt (1870-1937), made for the firm of Rathbones. The article is reporting on the 1903 Grafton Gallery Arts and Crafts Exhibition where these were displayed as Exhibit 385:
“Pair of Hammered Brass Candlesticks. Exhibited by R LL B Rathbone. Designed and Executed by W T Pavitt.
Pavitt also exhibited other metalwork at the exhibition under Rathbone’s patronage so it is reasonable to assume that he was working for that firm at the time, and indeed these candlesticks are essentially from the Rathbone workshop.
They are, in my view, such a fantastic design that they will work well in an arts and crafts or contemporary home.
Thomas Pavitt was a London based metalworker and jeweller. He is best known for his interest in mysticism / symbolism, which he seems to have incorporated into his work (mainly jewellery). In 1914 he, with his wife Kate, wrote a book “The book of Talismans, Amulets and Zodiacal Gems”. These candlesticks probably represent some of his earliest work and the clear influence of the arts and crafts movement. His premises were 17 Hanover Square, London.
