A Bernard Harrington silver wine goblet
Price range: £545
A small deviation from my typical turn of the century items to embrace the best of British art deco silver and a new silversmith to the Collection.
For sale is this wonderful quality wine goblet by Bernard Harrington.
Bernard Harrington (1909 – 1993) was a Sheffield born silversmith who made his career in Scotland where he was Head of Silversmithing and Jewellery at Duncan of Jordanstone’s, Dundee University from 1943-1974. Here he was renowned as both teacher and silversmith, undertaking highly regarded commissions for the University and other civic institutions.
Little is known of his time in Sheffield. He was apprenticed at James Dixon & Son where his father was a silversmith. In February 1932 (at the age of 23) Harrington registered his own mark at the Sheffield Assay office and he was known to be an active member of the Sheffield Arts Crafts Guild alongside the likes of Joyce Himworth.
This wine goblet, or possibly chalice, reflects the design influences of the Guild. The hand raised bowl with a subtle planishing shows the influence of the arts and crafts movement, the base being more modernist deco in style.
The goblet is hallmarked for 1931 (which means it must date between Feb and May 1932) and represents the earliest of Harrington’s known works.
It is a good gauge of silver, very nice in the hand, and with a subtle interior gilding. Condition is excellent.
