A classic two handled footed silver dish by Charles Ashbee for the Guild of Handicraft
Price range: £3,250
For sale is this classic two handled footed bowl by Charles Ashbee for the Guild of Handicraft. Alan Crawford describes this porringer design as the most “characteristic and successful” application of Ashbee’s graceful use of wirework in silver. This example is slightly larger than others I have had.
It is often mistakenly thought these bowls had lids but in fact, as can be seen from a contemporary image at the time (see image reproduced from The Artist, Vol 33, 1902) the footed bowls did not always have lids.
For a near identical example on display at The Art Institute of Chicago see this link.
The condition is excellent. There is some “broken fire” discolouration to the interior of the bowl and one small area to the exterior with loss of patina where a bruise has probably been restored. I have deliberately not over polished the bowl so these charateristics remain visible.
