A Michelsen Thomsen Danish silver and ceramic butterfly buckle

Price: Sold

For sale is this very special silver Danish art nouveau butterfly buckle.   The silver is made by the Danish crown jewellers Anton Michelsen.  The Royal Copenhagen ceramic butterfly inserts are designed by the leading Danish sculptor/modeller Christian Thomsen.

The silver is fully assayed for Michelsen 1908, 925 standard.  The ceramic is fully marked for Royal Copenhagen, Christian Thomsen (Ch or Th), model 336 – 50.

Anton Michelsen are famous for defining modern Danish silver through their production of the Japanese influenced designs of Thorvald Bindesboll in the c 1896-1902 period, that in turn inspired Georg Jensen’s silver work.  This butterfly brooch continues their longstanding links to Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory in the art nouveau style.

The buckle is in excellent original condition.  Fine gilding to the ceramic is almost entirely intact, with just some very small rubbed areas to the upper butterfly wings.   See images.  No other imperfections identified.
