A John Finlayson Lang Scottish silver dish
It is always nice to add a new “name” to the Collection and this is such a piece. For sale is the good sized and heavy gauge dish by the Scottish silversmith Dr. John Finlayson Lang (1883-1949). The dish or bowl is hand raised and hand hammered with pierced Celtic design with raised wirework borders. A lovely piece “in the hand” and very useful!
I have researched Lang and he was a skilled amateur silversmith who took silversmithing late in his life – quite possibly he was returning to his routes as his father Alexander Lang was a watchmaker. Originally a teacher he then retrained at Glasgow Medical School as a doctor. For most of his career he was the medical officer for Pumpherston Oil Company with a practice also serving the Bathgate and Seafield areas between Edinburgh and Glasgow (source: West Lothaian Courier obituary).
