A John Pearson arts and crafts Newlyn copper fish vase
Price range: Sold
For sale is this very good John Pearson copper vase, signed to the base and dated 1895, when Pearson was working with the Newlyn School having left The Guild of Handicraft. The quality of the workmanship demonstrates Pearson at his very best.
The design depicts a classic Pearson “shoal”of stylised, and rather happy, fish circling the vase. There are four larger central fish repeated with smaller fish repeated above and below that – all four “sides” of the vase are shown in the images. The design is picked out in the copper beautifully with Pearson’s trademark high quality repousse and chasing.
The vase is a good size and condition is excellent, with crisp repousse and a good colour. There are a few tiny holes, only visible using a shining light, where Pearson has stressed the copper repousse to its limits at the edges of some of the raised fish. These will be original to the piece.
