A massive Kate Harris silver and copper tankard
Price: Sold
For sale is this massive silver and copper Kate Harris silver tankard made by William Hutton & Sons. It is fully assayed for London 1901. The design of the tankard is highly innovative. It is a mix of copper and silver, carefully riveted together so that the silver componenet is assayed in compliance with the then strict UK laws on hallmarking (silver soldered to copper could not be assayed). The design is classic Harris organic art nouveau. Each side holds inset circular yellow enamels.
Harris was employed by the London studio of William Hutton & Sons to produce artistic silver from 1899 to c 1905. Harris was one of the very few women, or British exhibitors, to win recognition at the 1900 Paris International Exhibition.
