A pair of Latino Movio silver napkin rings
Price range: Sold
For sale is this rare pair of silver napkin rings by Latino Movio for the firm of Holland, Aldwinkle and Slater. They are fully assayed for London 1904 and each is signed L. Movio.
Each ring carries classic, different, Movio repousse leaf and flower design, beautifully worked. One ring has an applied flower (a rose I think) in what looks like rose gold and silver (conceivably copper and silver). This highly unusual addition would appear to be original to the ring which is otherwise devoid of a repousse flower.
The rings are in fantastic, crisp, condition and an excellent gauge of silver.
Very little is known of Movio but he appears to have worked alongside Gilbert Marks from c 1894 and continued to make pieces in Marks’ style after Marks’ death in 1904. Movio appears in the 1911 census as an Italian ‘artist in metal repoussé’, an appropriate description for a craftsman who, alongside, Gilbert Marks, was clearly one of the finest in his field in the both the 19th and 20th centuries.
