A pair of silver Bertha Inglis boxed spoons
For sale is this rare and unusual pair of modernist Bertha Inglis boxed spoons. A good gauge of silver and in excellent condition. The box is unmarked but appears original. The spoons are marked for Edinburgh, 1930.
I confess I did not know Inglis before acquiring these spoons. My research has found that she was a teacher at the Edinburgh School of Arts from 1930-41 and 1953-56. She registered her own mark in or slightly before 1930. She was elected to the Society of Scottish Artists in 1934.
Between 1941 and 1953 it seems she worked privately as a metal work teacher She exhibited extensively in the 30’s and other images includes press comment on her work which seems to have been consistently modernist and, in part, influenced by a sabbatical in Sweden. She died in 1966 (maybe 1963).
