The enamel base to this vase would have been made by Jacob Rapoport, a highly regarded Hungarian enameller who sold his signature marble pinky enamels to both Liberty and Maison Moderne and other art nouveau manufacturers and retailers across Europe c 1900. Based on surviving examples Knox was asked to make a number of silver designs utilising such enamel, all around c 1900-1901. These pieces represent some of Knox’s most avant garde and modernist early works.
