A rare Jessie King enamel on copper brooch

For sale is this exceptionally rare and beautiful Jessie King enamel on copper “swallow brooch”. It is a classic motif of the Glasgow School and this enamel depicts similar designs that can be found on artwork by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Frances Herbert Macnair dating to c 1895
The brooch is not signed but has perfect provenance to Fra Newbery, via his daughter Mary Newbery Sturrock. Fra Newbery was head of the Glasgow School of Art 1885-1917 and the “fifth man” of the Glasgow Four of Mackintosh, MacDonald and the MacNairs.

The brooch also appears in The Glasgow Style by Gerald and Celia Larner, exhibit 196. The brooch has always been known as a Jessie King piece by the Newbery family. A personal work by her is exceptionally rare. Her more common jewellery designs were made by William Hair Haseler for Liberty & Co. This brooch will date to c 1900.
Jessie Marion King (1873-1949) is a famous Glasgow school artist, illustrator, engraver and designer. She worked for Liberty & Co from c 1904-6 and was responsible for many of their later Cymric range jewellery designs. She is most famous for her illustrations in the style of this plate.
