A rare silver goblet or chalice set with moonstones by John Williams

For sale is this large goblet or chalice by john Williams – fully hallmarked with his mark for London 1903.   The base and stem of the goblet have repousee and chased fine leaves and flowers.  The goblet bowl is plain with hand hammering.  The base is set with three moonstones.

John Williams is one of the most important, if understated, metalworkers of the arts and crafts movement.  He was one of the two original metalworkers with the Guild of Handicraft when it founded, the other being John Pearson. He taught metalworking classes as well as clay modeling, wood carving and plaster casting. He left the Guild in 1892 and was involved with a number of the schools linked with the Home Arts and Industries Association including the Newton School and the Fivemiletown class in Ireland.  His designs were regularly published in the studio (and much copied).  His output in silver is tiny, and this goblet represents a significant work by him.
