A set of four Charles Ashbee for the Guild of Handicraft gem set salt and peppers
For sale is this is fantastic silver salt and pepper set designed by Charles Ashbee for the Guild of Handicraft. Each salt and pepper pair is set with green or red stones which I believe to be chrysoprase and coral respectively. These pieces are unmarked but the near identical design for the pepper appears in Ashbee’s Modern English Silver Work, plate, 38, and also can be seen in a photograph of a collection of Ashbee silver published in The Artist, (Vol 33, Jan 1902, Page 17) – see images. An image of the salt also appears in Dekorative Kunst, April 1899, volume 4, issue 7.
One salt carries a Dutch import mark (a boars head in a triangle) only used from 1893-1905, guaranteeing these as authentic period items.
Condition is excellent. Please note these pieces are small, albeit perfectly formed!
