A signed pair of Newton School large copper candlesticks
Price: Sold
I am delighted have this large pair of Newton School copper candlesticks for sale. Both signed to the base by the School’s leading metalworker Albert Prime as follows.
“MADE BY A PRIME, NEWTON, CAMBS”
The candlesticks’ design, from the Newton School archive, is shown in my images. The six supporting columns give the candlesticks quite a modernist, almost Glasgow School, arts and crafts appearance.
Patina and condition is very good and the original patina has been enhanced with a light waxing. The design of these candlesticks is such that they work well in an arts and crafts or modern interior concept.
The Newton School was established in the tiny village of Newton in Cambridgeshire in around 1890, under the auspices of the Home Industries Association, in the style of Newlyn and other Schools. Albert Prime became their lead metalworker and teacher from c 1910, continuing with the Guild up until its closure in around 1940. Whilst less famous than some of its peers, the School produced some superb work in copper, including to designs by John Williams. David Marshal of Hammer and Hand has written extensively about the School and Prime at this link.
