A Winifred King silver “sunflower” spoon
Price: Sold
For sale is this very nice Winifred King (1891-1968) silver spoon with sunflower terminal to the handle. Winifred King and Co was an arts and crafts venture dating from c 1920-1940 between Winifred King and Mildred Murphy. Based in Coventry, they are best known for their small silver items such as spoons.
King and Murphy worked at Old Palace Chambers, Earl Street, in Coventry and King was a leading figure in the local arts movement, becoming Secretary of the Coventry and Warwick Society of Artists. She was a regular exhibitor at their annual exhibitions as well as the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists Exhibitions. Her work can be found in Coventry’s main museum, the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery.
Included in other images is a 1927 Coventry Herald article on one of their exhibitions.
I always feel King, and Murphy, would be better known had their hallmark not been Winifred King & Co, suggesting a commercial venture, which they were not.
