An arts and crafts enamel plaque by Frederic James Shields

For sale is this lovely enamel plaque by the renowned artist and enameller Frederic James Shields (1833-1911).  The plaque appears to depict a cockerel turned to his four hens in a landscape.  Such is the characterisation of the hens, you have to wonder if there is a hidden meaning or private humour underlying this plaque.  The plaque is beautifully done with vibrant colours and what is clearly an original copper frame.

More information on Shields can be found at this link to his extensive Wikipedia page.  He was an artist closely associated with the  pre-raphaelite movement and worked extensively in stained glass. In his later years he embraced enamelling and the arts and craft movement.  Such was his significance to the latter, Ernestine Mills wrote his biography after his death in 1912.

Condition is excellent and original.  The plaque is signed with Shields momogramme.
