An arts and crafts silver casket

Price range: £1,450

For sale is this large, heavy,  arts and crafts silver casket, by Frederick Courthope, with applied strapwork “hinges” to the lid. Frederick Courthope was a leading silversmith who took over the premises and workshop of the leading Victorian silversmith George Angell in around 1884, trading under his own name with F.C sponsor mark from 1889.  Despite training as a traditional silversmith Courthope appears to have embraced, in silver, the modern design movements of the period.  Most notably from c. 1900 he started to produce authentic arts and crafts pieces, typically of an exceptional gauge of silver, as for this casket.  Courthope was a member of the Art Workers Guild.  He ceased trading in 1912.

This casket could readily be lined to make a very lovely jewellery or trinket box.
