An early Ramsden & Carr silver cigar case
Price range: Sold
For sale is this early and rare large Ramsden & Carr silver cigar case. I have never seen a cigar case by these renowned silversmiths and this is of stunning quality, scale and gauge.
The front is designed with classic arts and crafts or art nouveau stylised leaves. The upper right corner includes a monogram in a repousse “A” forming part of the original design. (“A” for Anthony or Alwyn, take your pick!). The case is fully assayed for 1901, so was made in just the third full year of this famous partnership’s collaboration.
Condition is very good and the case is useable. The hinge is in excellent original condition as is the clasp and the case opens and closes very satisfyingly. There are four redundant rivets to the plain back of the case which probably originally held hooks or equivalent to hold matches. There are no bruises. The repousse design is in very good condition with just a slight loss of the finer detail as might be expected after 120 years of polishing. The interior retains it subtle satin finish.
Hallmarks are to the interior and are crisp. Above the hallmarks is faintly scratched “Omar Ramsden et Alwyn Carr me fecurunt” (Omar Ramsden and Alywn Carr made me) -see images.
