An exceptional tall Christopher Dresser sterling silver claret jug
I am delighted to add another sterling silver piece by Christopher Dresser to the Collection. To my mind he is without doubt the father of both modern and commercial design. Pieces that are designed by Dresser in sterling silver are rare.
This jug is the taller 40 cm tall model 2267, and is hallmarked for Heath and Middleton (successor firm to Hukin and Heath). Birmingham, 1892. An example, slightly smaller than this model, is illustrated in the exhibition catalogue “Christopher Dresser Pioneer of Modern Design”, Gent, 2007, no. 012. Identical examples to this jug can be seen at MOMA, in New York, and the Minneapolis Institute of Fine Art.
Condition is excellent. There is a crest engraved to the lid exterior (see images) and a small Austrian import assay mark, pre 1902.
